When you use Skype to call someone's phone (land line or mobile phone), it typically displays "unavailable" as the caller id number. Did you know that you can tell Skype what number to display as the caller id? Here are the steps to setting it up:

  1. Browse to http://www.skype.com and log in to your account.
  2. In the middle of the page, toward the right side, you will see a "Manage Features" section with Windows-8-looking tiles (you did know that Microsoft bought Skype, right?) under it. Click the Caller ID tile.
  3. Select your country from the drop down list.
  4. Type the number you would like to use at the caller id number into the text box and click the "Verify number" button.
  5. Skype will send a text message to the number you've entered containing a verification code. Type that code into the text box on the Web page and then click the "Verify" button.

After you finish these steps, Skype tells you that the caller id number will not be activated for 24 hours. They will send another text message to the number you've given them to let you know when it's working.
